Lucy Turns One

I can hardly believe it! This year has been such a whirlwind, I can’t believe it’s already over! When people say these years go by quick, they are not lying! Those first three months could not go by slower, but ever since then I feel like we’ve been in warp speed. Lucy starts smiling and giggling, and before we knew it she was taking steps and playing games with us. It’s truly amazing how much they learn and advance in just one year.

Lucy being our first born, we knew we had to go all out for her first birthday party. We invited all of our friends (at least the ones with families and kids) and all my new mom friends/Lucy’s friends. Everyone kept reminding me that Lucy wouldn’t remember anything about the party, but let’s be real. The first birthday party is always for the parents. Because hey, WE MADE IT TOO!! Everyone’s alive and well, and that’s a reason to throw a party!

We threw her a Mermaid Bash birthday party the week before her birthday. We had it a couple blocks away at a park, which really worked out well. There were so many kids, so it was perfect having a playground for them to play around on. We got lucky with the weather and it turned out being so much nicer and sunnier than we could have ever expected. (If you know San Francisco, you know that sunny days can be sparse.)

I absolutely love mermaids and so does Lucy, so it was a no brainer when it came to the theme. Mermaids are totally in right now too, so finding cute decorations was really easy.

I love paying special attention to the small details, so having some fun little extras were a must. I got some chocolate coins and a few little fake jewels, and made a “mermaid treasure” and the rock candy was coral in sand [sixlets]. I was totally obsessed with the iridescent plates I found (at Target) and matched them with a smaller purple plate. I even added some fun paper straws to make things a little more exciting! I’m sure not many people noticed these smaller details, but I will always remember them because they were my favorite part! Besides Lucy of course!

Obviously the cake was a big deal. We got ours from Susie Cakes and we were not disappointed. The best part: Their signature color is a vintage blue, so it worked really well with our mermaid theme! (And I didn’t have to pay extra for a custom one!) I ended up getting the small cake, so that I could give it to Lucy as her smash cake, then just got two dozen mini cupcakes for the guests.

The smash cake was a success. She absolutely loved it (who could blame her) and made a total mess, which was expected. When we first sat the cake down in front of her, she wasn’t sure what to do with it. She patted it gently a couple times, then just went in for it with her mouth! (For my baby who loves to destroy everything, I was super surprised she didn’t smash the cake the second I plopped it down in front of her!)

We had such a good time celebrating and spending time with all of our friends. I loved that we had old friends and new friends, and we finally got to have our two worlds collide. It was so great to have everyone come together to celebrate our Lucy’s first birthday. She had such a good time with all of her friends and family, and clearly loved being able to have her cake and eat it too!

Afterwards we went home and had some dinner, and after Lucy got to open all her gifts. She had so much fun ripping all the paper off everything and pulling everything out of the bags, I think she had more fun with all the packaging then she did with the actual toys! She was so spoiled by everyone and got so many gifts, we are so grateful to have so many wonderful friends to share this special time with. In the end, the day turned out to be perfect and Lucy’s first birthday party was a total success! Thank you again to everyone who showed up and helped make her day be so special! We are so lucky to have you all in our lives and we can’t wait for so many more years to come!

On her actual birthday, October 13th, we just decided to do a fun dinner with the just the three of us, and keep it small and simple. We went to our favorite pizza spot in San Francisco, Za Pizza. (If you’re ever in SF and want the best pizza ever, go to Za!!) We know the owner and most of the guys who work there since we lived two blocks away for so many years, so we always enjoy going there to catch up with everyone. Lucy had her very first bite of pizza at Za a few months ago, so hopefully she remembered this magical place.

Afterwards we just went home and had a quiet, family evening playing with all her new toys. All of our friends were so incredibly generous, Lucy will have new toys to play with for months! I always knew Lucy would have a fantastic group of friends and family, but I could have never expected the amount of love that was showed during her birthday!

Lucy has been such a beautiful gift to us and we are so happy (and a bit surprised) we all survived the first year! I am so grateful and have learned so much in just one short year. Lucy has taught me things about myself I never knew and has made my grow in ways I never knew I could. She has pushed me to better myself and be the best I can be for her and our family, and I am forever grateful for that. Having a baby was the last thing I ever expected for my life, but now I am so happy and content with our beautiful life we’ve created. I am a better, more whole person after having Lucy and I can’t wait to see what the future years will bring us!

What did you do for your little ones first birthday? Did you keep it simple or did you go all out? What kind of party did have or did you do that was special? I love hearing from you! Like, comment and share!
